In the afternoon, do a city tour of Astana. Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan since 1997, is situated on a picturesque bank of the Ishim River. The town of Akmolinsk acquired incorporated status in 1862. It had long been famous for its fairs. Merchants from all regions of Kazakhstan, Russia and the Central Asian countries traveled here. As the development of virgin lands began, the town was renamed Tselinograd and typified the administrative center of an agricultural region. Since acquiring the status of capital the city’s face has changed dramatically. The architects and builders working in the capital create wonderful architectural ensembles, which harmoniously combine modern design and oriental flair. The Baiterek Tower has become the city’s symbol and its visiting card. The height of the structure is 105 meters. At the height of 97 meters there is an observation deck providing a bird’s eye view of the city. The figure of 97 was not chosen at random. It symbolizes the year of the movement of the capital from Almaty to Astana. The Baiterek Tower accommodates an art gallery, a large aquarium and a restaurant. Astana has become one of the largest business centers in the region. All governmental organizations, the diplomatic missions of 44 countries and 113 joint ventures and foreign businesses are located here. In 1999 by decision of UNESCO, Astana was awarded the title of World City. The city has an opera and Ballet Theater, a drama theater and a variety of museums. The monuments of Astana are a linking element between the new capital and its history, held in esteem by all the people of Kazakhstan. Currently, many administrative buildings and business and entertainment centers are under construction in Astana. Among them is the Duman entertainment complex. It is a place for public recreation featuring an oceanarium, 3D movie theater, theater, area for slot machines and interactive games, multifunctional sideshow venue, bowling, night club, casino, hotel, cafes and restaurants and an indoor aquapark. Another attraction of Astana is the ethnopark “Map of Kazakhstan - Atameken” representing a unique outdoor museum. The map area of 1.7 hectares features cities and historical memorials of Kazakhstan.  During a sightseeing tour around the capital visit of the Monument to Defenders of Fatherland (Eternal fire), the Monument to victims of political repressions, the Complex “Astana – Bayterek” (visiting), the World and Consent Palace. The excursion route passes through streets and prospectuses of the city which will show you sights of young capital.

Established in 1854 as a frontier fort, Almaty has developed into the largest cosmopolitan city in Kazakhstan with a population of approximately 1,200,000 people. Since independence in 1991, the city has experienced a significant transformation from its sudden exposure to western markets. Almaty, formerly the capital of Kazakhstan, remains the business, financial and cultural center of the country. The Central State Museum offers an excellent overview of Kazakhstan’s history and includes numerous exhibit halls which provide an overview of the country’s chief archeological treasures and ancient traditions. Visitors to the city should also not miss Panfilov Park and the fabulous tsarist-era Russian Orthodox Cathedral, which was build entirely of wood early in the last century. Other places of interests are the Republic SquareKok-Tobe mountain with its television tower. Kok-tobe means “Blue Hill” in Kazak and offers spectacular views of the city and the Tien-Shan mountains in clear weather, especially after rains. The 372 meter tall TV tower is the fourth largest in the world. Its location at 1,000 meters above sea level makes it powerful enough to broadcast TV to all Kazakhstan.

Big Almaty Lake, located at an altitude of 2511 m, on the upper side of the canyon by the same name, is fed by the Almaty River running through it, and is part of a wonderful national park. Big Almaty Lake is set high up in a gorge of the Bolshaya Almatinka River, 2,511m above sea level and 28.5km south of Almaty. It lies in a hollow like a gleaming mirror, surrounded on all sides by majestic peaks. Three main peaks tower above the lake and can be seen from the northern end of the dam: Sovetov (4,317 m) to the southeast, Ozyorny (4,110 m) to the south, further up the river valley, and the forested slopes of Turist (3,954 m) to the southwest. The lake’s high altitude location keeps it cool, and so, even in July, the water temperature does not exceed 8 degrees. However, this does not stop winter swimmers, the loyal “ivanovezchs”, and even draws visitors from afar who would not miss a chance to harden their bodies by plunging into these pure icy waters and being revived. The canyon itself is considered to be extremely dangerous to climb in due to mudslides, and it is to the credit of Almaty mudslide specialists that the lake has survived to this day. The Big Almaty Gorge is one of the most noteworthy, accessible and frequently visited places.

Long ago, caravans from Europe and Asia passed through the “Royal Gates” on their way to China and India. The broad valley stretches east for 60 km. The Turgen Gorge is well known for its seven waterfalls. The Medvezhy (Bear) falls drop 30 meters in a beautiful setting amidst overhanging cliffs and green fir trees, while the Bozgul Falls, known for the force of their water, have worn away an entire tunnel in the rock. Another notable feature of the gorge is the ancient Chin-Turgen mossy fir forests which cover the ground and form a thick wall of trees. The most popular spot in the Turgen Gorge is Boten, the hunting base. Here, where three rivers meet, the gorge is at its deepest – 920 meters. The Turgen river flows southwest, while the Kishi-Turgen runs southeast. There is an observatory on the plateau. Ancient burial mounds and rock drawings are dotted along the Asy river.
